2478 A Potted History

The squadron was set up in February 1941 by the Mayor of Abergavenny Colonel J G Bishop. It was proposed that the opening off an Air training Squadron in Abergavenny would be beneficial to the young generation. It was originally opened as No.1062 (Abergavenny) Squadron and commanded by Flight Lieutenant H W Newcombe also headmaster of King Henry VII Grammar School. There were two flight’s A and B. these where the main flights set up in Abergavenny, along with C flight which was located in Crickhowell as a detached flight. The squadron parade nights were held on Mondays and Thursdays in the old work house in Union Road. Practical work intended on restoring engine parts to a Bi- plane off World War One heritage.

The Squadron was asked by the Royal Air Force to open a gliding school. It was decided that the local golf course was suitable to be used as a gliding school. The Kirby Cadet MK1 Glider was first used for training purposes and the gliding school was the first ever gliding school to be opened in South Wales and set the trend for the future and more to be opened.
